With the admission dates for government schools in Chandigarh and its surrounding areas coming to an end on Wednesday, authorities at the UT Education Department have now begun the allotment process.
Since the introduction of the grading system for the Class 10 Board exams, allotment of seats in government schools is now done on the basis of the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Students applying for admissions have an option to fill in 17 model schools of their choice, after which, seats are allotted on the basis of their CGPA scores. Those with a CGPA between 8 to 10,that has been achieved by nearly 40 per cent of the students, are given admission in schools of their choice.
For the last couple of years, model schools such as GMSSS,Sector 16 and GMSSS,Sector 35 are the most preferred by applicants. These are followed by the model schools in sectors 37,33 and Manimajra. The results of these schools have been outstanding due to which parents and students list them as their first preference, said Ram Kumar Sharma,District Education Officer,UT. Schools offering all four streams – medical,non- medical, commerce and Arts – are high in the student preferential list. Last year, applicants having CGPA of 8.4 and beyond were given seats in streams and schools of their preference, Sharma added.
Anujit Kaur,Principal of GMSSS-16 adds: This year the school is witnessing an increase in the number of applications. Last year, the Board Examinations for classes 10 and 12 were topped by students of our school following which, more and more students are placing their faith in our experienced faculty.
There are a total of 11,200 seats in all the schools for which, the Education Department has sold around 17,000 prospectus this year. The department has received an estimated 13,000 to 14,000 application forms. This year,an increase in cut-off is expected. The department holds three rounds of counselling, where reshuffling of seats allotted takes place. Vacant seats in the reserved category are de-reserved in the third counselling.
Government schools located in the periphery of the city, such as the model schools in Raipur,Kaimbvala,Saharanpur,Khuda Ali Sher,Khuda Lahora, among others figure at the bottom of students wish-list due to their location and rural surroundings. Sunil K Bedi, subject expert,Office of Director of Public Instruction said; A list will be displayed on June 27 reporting discrepancy (gender,CGPA,preferences) in filling up of the form,if any, that have been found in the application forms of the students. Two grievances cell have been created at GMSSS-22 and GMSSS-27 for the rectification of the same. All students should check the displayed list. The final list regarding allotment of seats in streams and schools will be displayed on June 30. Both lists will be displayed online.
