A group of under-graduate medical students of Safdarjung Hospital and its associated Vardhaman Mahavir Medical College(VMMMC),have written to the Director General Health Services(DGHS),alleging caste discrimination in the conduct of examination and evaluation.
About 25 students from the batch of 2004-09,had been failing their physiology exam — in the main and supplementary attempts — though they have passed in all other papers. The students who had approached the High Court in December 2010, alleged that authorities have repeatedly violated court guidelines.
Orders from the DGHS on the matter — including one directing the hospital to conduct extra classes in the subject to help students — was never implemented,said students.
Last year,after the examination was conducted under the supervision of the High court,though students cleared the physiology paper,they claim they have still not been allowed to attend classes in the second year,as per the court’s orders. The students representation added that they were being harassed for seeking judicial remedy.
An inquiry,conducted under the National Commission for Schedule Caste Chairman Dr P L Punia in July 2011,also found discrepancies in the examination process. Students claimed that the Committee’s directions to set up an internal inquiry was reportedly not heeded by the college.
Hopsital authorities declined to comment on the matter.
