Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU),Rohtak,Dr R P Hooda,is in the dock,for allegedly having committed financial irregularities to the tune of crores of rupees by allotting tenders for construction,architectural work,revamping and e-governance to his own son’s firm within one month of his taking over as MDU V-C and another computer firm,allegedly by twisting norms,rules and regulations. Taking cognisance of allegations,the Haryana Lokayukta has asked the Registrar to probe the entire matter.
When asked,the Registrar,S S Lamba,said,“The proceedings of such matter are confidential and I am not supposed to be saying anything on this.”
Assistant professor Rajesh Punia had lodged a complaint with the Haryana Lokayukta in August,last year,highlighting various irregularities allegedly committed at the behest of Dr R P Hooda. S S Lamba (a retired sessions judge) had already conducted a preliminary inquiry and then forwarded it to the Lokayukta for further proceedings. Dr R P Hooda raised serious contentions against the preliminary probe conducted by Lamba. The matter was heard by the Lokayukta,who dismissed Hooda’s contentions and ordered Lamba to go ahead and conduct a thorough probe into the matter.
Dr R P Hooda,a close confidante of Haryana Chief Minister,Bhupinder Singh Hooda,is accused of awarding the tender for construction work in MDU campus to his son’s firm. According to the complaint filed by Punia,the companies quoting the lowest price were ignored and Hooda’s son Ramneek’s firm Office for Alternative Architecture was chosen despite quoting three times the price.
Responding to queries by The Indian Express,Dr R P Hooda said,“I am not supposed to be saying anything on this matter. The case is on before the Lokayukta”.
Students’ body issues ultimatum
The Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) on Wednesday gave a four-day ultimatum to the state government to either remove Dr R P Hooda from the post of Vice-Chancellor and order a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities or students across the state will launch a massive stir in four days. The activists and supporters of INSO also protested outside Dr R P Hooda’s office at MDU. “We have given a four-day ultimatum to the state government. Either a thorough probe must be ordered against R P Hooda,or we shall intensify our agitation,” said INSO President Pradeep Deswal.
