Though the Panjab University had declared Saturday a working day,the student attendance in the departments was very low. As a result, the campaigning by student organisations was a low key affair on the campus today.
The tents of various groups which had come up near boys’ hostel number one and two on Friday night after the announcement of elections. Although, the student members went in various departments for canvassing, they themselves accepted that the strength was very low leading to poor response for canvassing.
Even in the tents, the usual election atmosphere was missing. The organisations are expecting that by Monday, things would gear up once the students return on the campus. Most of the organisations are planning to conduct rallies on foot on the campus on Monday.
While the University had issued instructions that no sticker or poster should be seen on vehicles, each organisation was blaming the other for violating this guideline. Though the stickers from their shirts or kurtas were missing today, they were still intact on their vehicles.
In the evening, organisations were seen making up for the day by campaigning in the hostels, both girls and boys.
With the elections, the infighting within groups has started. In the wee hours of Saturday,at around 1 am,three students of Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) had a spat among themselves in the organisation tent put up near boys’ hostel number one. The case was reported at Sector 11 Police Station where the students were let off after they apologised and gave an undertaking not to be involved in such activities during the elections.
