The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday summoned cricketer-turned-politician Mohammed Azharuddin in relation to a money laundering case during his tenure as the president of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The Congress leader has sought time to appear in front of the agency, say sources.

As part of a Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA) case, the ED is probing alleged financial irregularities in the HCA, for which it conducted searches in November last year.

The PMLA case follows three First Information Reports (FIRs) and chargesheets filed by the Telangana anti-corruption bureau (ACB). The ACB has alleged criminal misappropriation of the funds to the tune of Rs 20 crore, reported PTI.

Azharuddin was appointed HCA president in 2019 but his term, which ended with Justice (retd) L Nageswara Rao’s appointment in 2023, was impacted by infighting within the HCA Apex Council and several court cases.

While standing for a second term as the HCA president, Azharuddin had pledged to eliminate deep-rooted corruption in the governing body.
