Former Amreli MLA Paresh Dhanani was among 40 Congress leaders and workers, who were on the way to Surat’s Mangadh Chowk to hold a protest seeking action against police officers for allegedly parading the woman accused in the forged letter case, detained by the police Monday.
Last week, the Congress, led by Dhanani, launched the ‘Nari Swabhiman Andolan’ in Amreli against police action. On Saturday, Dhanani had announced that he would take the protest to Mangadh Chowk in Surat.
On Monday, after garlanding the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue at Mini Bazaar in Varachha, Dhanani, Pratap Dudhat, Virji Thummar and other Congress leaders proceeded to Mangadh Chowk when they were detained. The leaders were taken to Hazira police station, 17 km away.
The detained leaders then staged a dharna inside the police station till 5 pm after which they were released.
Addressing a press conference later, Dhanani said, “We are seeking justice for the woman and to ensure that such an incident won’t happen in the future. Our team had submitted an application to Varachha police for this event, but was rejected. We wanted to protest peacefully.”
He added that the accused woman’s fault was that she was employed at a “BJP leader’s office and acted on his direction to write a letter and later couriered it”.
“We just need to know why the woman, who was an employee, was made an accused,” he said, adding, “The state home minister (Harsh Sanghavi), who had come to Amreli to attend an event, had secretly told Amreli Superintendent of Police to take action in the case. Following this, the police caught the accused, including the Patidar woman”.
