With a rush at every ATM, the Delhi Metro staff are taking “advantage” of the in-house ATMs at some of the stations.

ATMs are installed at several Metro stations, but few have been working since November 8. At Vishwavidyalaya Metro station, the SBI ATM is one of the few that dispenses cash regularly, drawing long queues of commuters as well as passersby.

To beat the queue, some Metro staff at the station have worked out a “buddy system”, where a Metro staff, or one of the hawkers with a business on the station premises, stands in queue with ATM cards of two or three others.

“I have been working at the shop outside for years, so I know the staff. I have been in line for an hour to get money for myself. There’s nothing wrong if I help a friend,” says shop assistant Rahul.

When asked about the system, Metro personnel blamed “work pressure”.

“Are we supposed to leave our duty to stand in the queue?” said a staff member, who identified himself as a “controller.”

The police personnel deployed at the stations say it’s “impossible” for them to “even think about” getting in lines while on duty.
