The Centre on Monday informed the Supreme Court that it is considering setting up delimitation commissions for Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta conveyed this to a three-judge bench presided by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud.

The bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, was hearing a plea that sought a direction for conducting delimitation exercises in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland.

Responding to the notice issued by the SC, Mehta, appearing for the Centre, said that for “obvious reasons”, the process can wait as far as Manipur is concerned but the Centre is considering setting up these commissions for the other two states.

The SC asked Mehta to take instructions and inform it after two weeks.
