Manipur’s newly-appointed Governor Ajay Kumar BhallaA day after a mob attacked the office of the Superintendent of Police in Kangpokpi, Manipur’s newly-appointed Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a security meeting at Raj Bhavan on Saturday to review the security situation in the state.
At least 16 people and the district SP Manoj Prabhakar sustained injuries Friday night as stones were pelted and petrol bombs hurled at the SP’s office in Kuki-Zo-dominated district of Kangpokpi over the deployment of central forces at Saibol village, bordering Imphal East district, a Meitei majority district.
A statement from the Raj Bhavan said, “Taking stock of the prevailing law and order situation, the Governor reviewed the security apparatus and its arrangements throughout the state, with a particular focus on border areas.”
During the meeting, the Governor directed DGP Rajiv Singh to prioritise the safety of the people and urged Army and paramilitary forces to aid the administration in maintaining law and order. Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi and Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh were also at the meeting, besides senior police officers and representatives of the CRPF, BSF and Assam Rifles.
Friday’s mob attack took place during a 24-hour shutdown in the Kuki-Zo majority district called by the Committee on Tribal Unity, which represents the interests of Kuki-Zo groups. This was in response to a confrontation between security forces and Kuki-Zo women in the district on Tuesday.
According to locals, protesters gathered at the SP office demanding that joint security forces stationed at Saibol village in the district be removed.
