Cyclone Ditwah likely to make landfall in India on November 30 morning: Check Red Alert zones in Tamil Nadu

Cyclone Ditwah and Tamil Nadu Chennai Weather Today updates: Cyclone Ditwah has triggered Red and Orange alerts across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh as heavy rain, strong winds and flooding loom. The storm, which caused major devastation in Sri Lanka, is expected to make landfall on November 30.

Cyclone Ditwah Today Update: The approaching Cyclone Ditwah has the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh on high alert. Red and Orange warnings have been issued in various districts over the possibility of heavy rain, strong winds, and floods. Ditwah cyclone is forecast to make landfall along the Indian coasts on Sunday, November 30.

Cyclone Ditwah leaves 69 dead in Sri Lanka

The cyclone has wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka, displacing thousands and cutting off road communications. Power to many areas have been severed. So far, the death toll has mounted to 69, as per Daily Mirror.

The IMD said cyclonic storm Ditwah has moved from Sri Lanka and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal to north-northwestwards with a speed of 7 kmph  last night. “It is very likely to continue to move north-northwestwards across coastal Sri Lanka and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal and reach over southwest Bay of Bengal near North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by early morning of November 30,” the IMD said.

Read Alert zones

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Red Alert for heavy to very heavy rain on Saturday, November 29, at a few places with extremely heavy rain at one or two places in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Villuppuram, and Chengalpattu districts and Puducherry. “Strong surface winds with speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is likely to prevail over Delta region, adjoining Coastal districts, Puducherry and Karaikal area,” the IMD said in its latest bulletin.

On Sunday, Tiruvallur and Ranipet would be under a Red Alert.

Orange Alert zones

As per the IMD, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places over Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet districts and Karaikal area. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert on Saturday for these areas.

Kancheepuram, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri would be under an Orange alert on Sunday.

Cyclone Ditwah: Chennai weather forecast

Due to the influence of Cyclone Ditwah, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at a few places in Chennai on Saturday. Due to this, Chennai will be under an Orange alert.

The IMD further forecast that heavy to very heavy rain at a few places with extremely heavy rain at one or two places in Chennai, along with other districts is likely to occur on Sunday. Hence, an Orange Alert has been issued for the district for November 30.

The maximum temperature in Chennai on Saturday is likely to be around 28°C-29°C, while the minimum temperature will be around 24°C-25°C.

Cyclone Ditwah: Warning for fishermen

Fishing operations in coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts have been completely suspended till December 1. Any fishing vessel still out in the open sea have been asked to return to the shores immediately. “Those out at sea should avoid southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, Comorin area and along & off Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, south Andhra Pradesh & Sri Lanka coasts; adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal till December 1 and Southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Maldives and along & off Kerala coast till November 30,” the IMD advisory read.
