A Lopoke resident murdered two persons and tried to pass off their bodies as his own to get rid of an attempt to murder case,in which he was facing trial. Luck, however, eventually ran out for 30-year-old Gurnam Singh after the police arrested him for the murders on August 27.

Gurnam, who was absconding in the attempt to murder case, first murdered Nangal resident Sandeep Singh. The body was found by the Gharinda police on August 9. Later,he killed a migrant labourer from Ludhiana, whose body was found on August 16.

“Sandeep was a taxi driver. Gurnam hired him, made him consume liquor and later murdered him. He then made Sandeep wear his clothes. He also put his cellphone and a slip indicating that the deceased was Gurnam Singh. When the police informed Gurnam’s relatives, they identified the body,” said Amritsar Border Range Inspector General R P Mittal.

“The body’s left thumb was missing. Gurnam had chopped it off thinking that the police may want to go for fingerprint matching. As he could not carry the thumb with him,Gurnam sent his mother to get it later,” Mittal added.

The shoes that were found near the body were much smaller in size as compared to the ones worn by Gurnam. “Even the height of deceased was less than Gurnam,” said Amritsar (Rural) SSP Pritpal Singh. The police eventually came to know that the body was of Sandeep after his family identified him with the help of the shoes.

Following this, the police have booked Gurnam’s father Kartar Singh, mother Sawinder Kaur, brother Kashmir Singh, wife Sarabjit Kaur and his uncle Shingara Singh for criminal conspiracy and wrongly identifying a dead body. Except for Shingara, all have been arrested.

As the police started questioning his family,Gurnam hatched another plan. He brought a migrant labourer from Ludhiana with the promise of a job that will pay Rs 4,500 per month. Gurnam allegedly set him ablaze and this time, placed a suicide note near the body. It read: “I am Gurnam Singh and I had done a murder. To repent I am burning myself to death.” The body was found from an interlocking tiles factory — which had sacked Gurnam — in Sultanwind.

“This man was almost similar to Gurnam in height,” Mittal said. He placed his own shoes near the body, but this time, the shoes were oversized. “Also,Gurnam was illiterate and could not have written a suicide note. Gurnam said that he killed the two persons to get rid of court case against him and to blackmail the factory owners who had sacked him.”

“By killing the man in the factory,he wanted to kill two birds with one stone. His family planned to blackmail the factory owners by accusing them of killing Gurnam,” the IG added. The police were conducting raids to arrest four other accused in the case — Angrej Singh,Sukhdev Singh,Gurpreet Singh and Gurmej Singh.

“Other than the attempt to murder case,Gurnam had faced other cases in the past. But this case was the trigger for the murders,as he was the main accused,” SSP Pritpal Singh said.
