The Latur police have opened a probe into the murder of 26-year-old Kalpana Giri, general secretary of the city Youth Congress. Missing since March 21, Kalpana’s body was found in a lake in Tuljapur, 60 km from Latur city, two days later.
Police have detained two Congress workers and are questioning them. Police said they have also received a complaint from Kalpana’s parents that she may have been raped.
A case has been registered on the basis of the complaint but police said they will await the findings of the post-mortem examination.
Assistant inspector A D Powar of MIDC Latur police station said: “The doctors have reserved their opinion. After we receive the post-mortem report on Sunday, the picture will become clearer.”
Kalpana, who was single, left her Latur home at 7.30 am on March 21, saying she had to attend the birthday celebrations of MLA Amit Deshmukh, son of the late Vilasrao Deshmukh. But she failed to return home.
On May 23, her parents filed a missing person’s complaint. “Her body was found the same day in a lake in Tuljapur,” said police inspector Bhagwat Misal, who is the investigating officer in the case.
Misal said they have detained two Congress workers. “We have not yet arrested them, but are questioning them,” he said.
He said the two men were picked up after scanning footage retrieved from a toll booth located close to the lake where Kalpana’s body was found. “The footage shows the three travelling in a Ford Figo. They had stopped there to pay toll,” he said.
