Six men have been booked after a 22-year-old resident of Bajda village lodged a complaint with police stating that she had been abducted and raped by them for over two months. As per the complaint, the victim was initially raped by five of the accused and then allegedly handed to one Ruby of Jalandhar, who, the woman adds, lived with her for two months but threw her out with Rs 1,000 after finding out that she had become pregnant.

According to police, the woman was married but her husband had left her some three years ago. On January 19,she was taken by one Rahul and Bittu and three others, who allegedly raped her in Ludhiana before handing her over to Ruby. While police say that there is no concrete evidence to suggest that that money changed hands, they suspect that it is the case.

A case has now been registered against Rahul,Bittu,Ruby and three other unidentified people at the Meharbaan police station.”

“The woman is mentally upset and she never realised that the men were taking her away after raping her. We have no details of exchange of money, but the woman gave this statement that Rahul,Bittu and others left her with Ruby who lived with her in Jalandhar and later also took her to Una where he repeatedly raped her,” SHO of Meharbaan police station Surjeet Singh said.

The woman had managed to reach Kiratpur Sahib on April 27; where she was spotted by members of a shrine management board. After seeking her details, they sent her to the Ludhiana Police, who later sent her to Meharbaan.

“We have registered a case under Section 366,376-D against Rahul,Bittu,Ruby and three others as per the victim’s statement. She has been handed over to her father who lives in Bajda village and she was not able to reveal much details because of her poor mental health. We have no idea as of now on the whereabouts of the accused and are investigating into this case,” SHO Singh added.

Forced to compromise,‘rape’ victim attempts to commit suicide

A woman in her 30s consumed poison on Monday after personnel at the Talwandi Sabo police station allegedly refused to register a case against two people, she had accused of raping her,and instead forced her to reach a compromise.

According to the woman, she had first approached the police alleging that Gurbachan Singh and another Gurbhachan Singh Chatha had raped her. They, however, allegedly did not take her seriously. When she returned with a written complaint on April 28,police allegedly forced her to reach a compromise after taking Rs 6,000 from both the accused. The woman, however, refused and consumed poisonous substances; she was hospitalised on Monday.

While her condition is stable, police did not file a case against anyone till the filing of this report. The woman is married and has been working as a domestic help in the houses of both the accused.

Bathinda SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar was not available for comments while IG (Bathinda range) Nirmal Singh Dhillon stated that he was away from the city for two days and will inquire into the case. “Suitable action will be taken against the culprits after due investigation,” he said.
