The Vadodara police caught a juvenile for raping a 23-year-old woman, two weeks after he was put in a remand home for a molestation case, from where he had escaped. The incident sent the Vadodara city police on an all night hunt for the accused, who blackmailed her friend by making public the clipping of the incident, if they did not pay up Rs 50,000.

According to the police, at around 9.30 pm on Sunday, the 23-year-old victim was with her male friend near Amin party plot in Gorwa, when the accused, riding a two-wheeler brandished a knife at them. “He checked the girl’s purse and found an ATM card inside. At knifepoint, he told her to accompany him to the nearby ATM to withdraw cash from her card. They withdrew Rs 1000 from an ATM closeby after which, he told her that her friend would be waiting for her at Sindhrot.

The accused then abducted the girl to Sindhrot against her wishes. He took her into the fields in the dark and raped her,” Commissioner of Police Satish Sharma said. The accused also filmed the act, according to the police and threatened to make the video public if the victim made any mention of the crime.

Sharma said, “In fact, he also blackmailed another friend of the girl who called her as he was trying to track her and demanded Rs 50000 from them before abandoning the girl back at the spot where he had abducted her.”

At around midnight, as the police received information regarding the incident, the city police formed several teams to track down the accused and rounded him up at his Gorwa residence within six hours. Sharma said, “When the crime branch was going through a list of the accused, the girl’s male friend who was with her when she was abducted, identified the accused from his previous crime records.

He has escaped from an observation home, where he was lodged after being arrested for another crime.” In fact, police records show that the accused, who is a little under 18 years of age has been previously accused of five vehicle thefts, loot cases in Gotri and Vadodara Taluka.

He had been sent to a remand home in a molestation case on June 9 this year, lodged at the Taluka police station. The police have arrested the accused on charges of rape, loot and abduction after medical examination of the victim confirmed the crime. The money, mobile phones and the two-wheeler used for the crime have been seized.
