Concluding that Defence Ministry official Kumar Yashkar strangled his wife Archana and then immolated himself in their Hudco Place flat, the Delhi Police on Tuesday said “this is a case of murder and suicide and there is no foul play… the case is abated”.

Police said they came to the conclusion after they received the post-mortem reports on Tuesday afternoon. The report mentions the cause of death as burning and suffocation in the case of Yashkar, and strangulation in Archana’s case.

Police said Yashkar strangled his wife with her chunni and then burnt himself. The time of death has been placed as “between 6 am and 8 am”.

“Things became clear after the post-mortem reports. We had initially registered a case of murder, but since it is clear that there is no foul play,a report will be sent to the court saying that the case is abated,” said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat.

Police said financial crises in the family led to the murder-suicide.

Earlier,Archana’s family told reporters that Yashkar was under financial pressure and depended on her earnings as a dance teacher.

“It was a mistake to have given off my sister in marriage to such a man. We never imagined that a person of such stature would do something like this,” said Jitendra Sharma,Archana’s brother.
