After remaining in coma for over six months following rape and a bid to strangulate her,the Dalit girl of Pipili in Odisha’s Puri district died at a hospital in Cuttack today.
“The girl, who was already in a very critical state, died following septicaemia and severe respiratory and cardiological complications,” Dr B N Maharana,Emergency Officer of the SCB Medical College and Hospital, said.
Following intervention of Orissa High Court, the 19-year-old victim was moved to the hospital on January 11 from the Capital Hospital here where she had been admitted on January 9,2012.
Though the girl was allegedly raped by four persons on November 28,2011,police registered an FIR on January 9 this year after the State Human Rights Commission intervened.
The crime branch police had filed four chargesheets against eight people, including a dismissed police inspector and three doctors before a court in Pipili.
While four persons have been arrested till date, the policeman and doctors have not been taken into custody.
State agriculture minister Pradip Maharathy, who had been charged with shielding the persons accused in the rape case, had resigned on “moral ground” on January 19.
