Three youths arrested on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the rape of a 37-year-old woman at Park Street a few days ago, were remanded in police custody till March 3. They were arrested from Howrah and Taltala. The three were produced before the Bankshall Court on Sunday afternoon, after which the police was given custody. The prime accused in the case, however, has managed to escape from the state. Police registered a case of gang rape today.
The trio – Sumit Bajaj,Nishad Alam aka Tusi and Naseer Khan – was produced before the court in the after noon. The state governments advocate opposed the bail petition filed by Sumits lawyer. The lawyer submitted that since the arms used by the accused during the crime could not be recovered,he should therefore be denied bail. Their interrogation is needed for recovery of the arms, which would be vital evidence in the case. On the other hand, advocate of the accused submitted that since the medical test did not confirm rape, bail should be given to his client.
Moreover,he claimed that Sumit was picked up from near Exide Crossing, but police showed that he was arrested from somewhere else. A police officer said the fourth accused is suspected to have escaped from the state and fled to another state. A police team has been pressed into service to nab him.
