Two rival groups of gangsters lodged in Mathura district jail exchanged fire on jail premises Saturday afternoon, raising questions on the security in jails. The firing led to the death of one of the rival group members while three others sustained injuries.
During a search operation inside the jail, the police team, led by Mathura SSP Manzil Saini, recovered a .9 mm and a .32 bore pistol from one of the barracks.
The deceased has been identified as Akshay Solanki, a murder convict hailing from Agra district, while those injured include rival group head Rajesh Sharma alias Tota of Hathras, his brother-in-law Raj Kumar Sharma and Solanki’s associate Deepak Meena who is also a murder convict. Deepak works as a writer in the jail office. The condition ofRaj Kumar is stated to be critical as he suffered bullet injury in his stomach.
The state government has ordered suspension of district jail superintendent Rakesh Kumar and Agra Central Jail Superintendent B R Verma has been made the in-charge.
