The situation was brought under control and about 25 police personnel were stationed in the area.

However, around 5.30 pm on Tuesday, the situation went out of control when the two groups, who live in the same gali, began pelting stones at each other.

“Before we knew it,tension had spread to the entire locality and around 700 people began pelting stones at one another. We had to resort to the use of tear gas shells to bring the crowd under control. Within a few minutes, the entire district police had arrived at the spot,” the officer said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (West) V Renganathan said,“We have registered a case of rioting. Several persons have been detained. We will catch the culprits soon.”

By 9 pm,the situation had been brought under control. Police are looking for the woman who was allegedly molested. “She will have to give us a statement and we will investigate further,” said a senior police officer.
