After seven months of playing hide-and-seek,the Crime Branch on Thursday arrested Sanjay Bhattacharya for the murder of his friend Shrikant Singh.

In July 2011,Shrikant,an insurance advisor, was murdered, allegedly by three friends for his brand new Hyundai i10 car. Shrikant’s body was chopped up and left at different places in Rewari district,Haryana.

Sanjay, who was declared a proclaimed offender, was arrested by the Crime Branch from the New Delhi railway station while he was boarding the Purshottam Express to Puri. He carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head.

“Our teams visited various places in Jharkhand in December and then again in February but were not able to trace him. We finally learnt that Sanjay was working at a petrol pump in Koderma. He was living there to evade arrest. When our team reached the petrol pump,he fled to Ranchi. At Ranchi,we found out that he had come to Delhi,”said Sandeep Goel,Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).

Two associates of Sanjay,Manish Kumar and a juvenile, have already been arrested.

Soon after the murder of Shrikant, the family members of the deceased had alleged that the three were behind the murder.

Though they were called for questioning, police had to let them go for lack of evidence.

“The local police later got evidence against them and arrested Manish and the juvenile. By then,Sanjay had absconded,” said a police officer.

Police said that on July 29,2011,Sanjay called Shrikant to his rented house in Greater Noida on the pretext of lending him money.

“Once there, they made Shrikant drink heavily, after which the three strangled him. Manish and the juvenile beheaded the body, wrapped it in a mattress and dumped the head near the Jaipur Highway. The body parts were dumped at Kasola in Rewari,Haryana,” said a police officer.
