The boy, who is a pickpocket and addicted to sniffing whitener, was recently arrested in a chain-snatching case and for quarrelling with another person, but being a juvenile he was given bail, said the police.

R K Satpathy, the Regional Director of a Koraput-based unit of DRDO who sustained injuries below his chest in the attack, is out of danger and his statement has been recorded.

The incident occurred when Satpathy, with a group of 15 DRDO officials, had gone to the Charminar area here for sight-seeing and shopping.

The boy allegedly snatched a cellphone from the pocket of Satpathy’s colleague. He was immediately caught by some locals and handed over to Satpathy. While the police were being informed, the boy took out a shaving blade, slashed Satpathy and fled.
