Unable to bear the harassment by her husband and in-laws, a 28-year-old NRI woman from Nellore allegedly committed suicide in California.
Saisindhu married California-based software engineer Uday Kumar in May 2011 and moved there after two months. Her father, S Krishnaiah, says that although Uday Kumar did not make any demand for dowry, he used to harass Saisindhu and sometimes physically assault her daughter.
“She called us several times to complain that she was beaten up by Uday Kumar. We asked her to return home many times. I had also called up Uday Kumar many times and asked him to send back my daughter, even assuring to bear the flight expenses. But he convinced my daughter to stay on every time,’’ said Krishnaiah over phone from Nellore.
He gave an application to the Nellore Superintendent of Police to register a case against Uday Kumar and his Hyderabad-based parents. According to Krishnaiah, Uday Kumar had called them on February 5 and informed them that Saisindhu had attempted suicide and he had admitted her in hospital.
“Initially he claimed that she hanged herself in their bedroom after he left for work. When one of our relative went and met him he told him that she hanged herself in the drawing room. Although, she probably died the same day, he kept telling us that she was in hospital and informed of her death last night,’’ Krishnaiah said.
