A police officer was killed and three constables were injured in North Kashmir’s Sopore town during an operation launched by the police and the Army to nab top Lashkar commander Muzuffar Naikoo.
The operation at Chankhan locality was launched following reports of Naikoo’s presence there. The militant, however, managed to get away.
According to officials, when troops of the Special Operation Group of the police along with the Army surrounded the militant, he opened fire.
Assistant sub inspector Kafeel Ahmad, who was taken to Army hospital, succumbed to his injuries.
“We had specific information about the presence of militants in the area. As the troops were conducting the search operation, the militant opened fire resulting in the death of a police officer. Three constables also sustained injuries,” Superintendent of Police, Sopore, said.
A search operation to track down the escaped militant was called off after three hours. Naikoo has been active in the town from the past six years and has escaped the police earlier as well. Police said he was also involved in the killing of two sisters, Akhtara and Arifa, on January 31, 2011 in Muslim Peer locality of the town.
This is the first attack in the Valley this year in which a police official lost his life.
