A 26-year-old woman was stabbed to death on Thursday morning following a scuffle with her brother-in-law over a bucket of water in Bharat Nagar,Northwest Delhi, police said.
The woman,Mumtaz, and her husband Mohammad Mukhtaar used to share the small house with her in-laws and augment the familys income by working as a domestic help.
Mukhtaar, who works at a tubelight manufacturing unit, told police that his wife has not been able to get along with his family.
I had gone to drop our children to school. When I returned,I found my younger brother Bobby abusing Mumtaz. He was in the bathroom and Mumtaz had requested him to fill a bucket for her. When I intervened,my parents and brothers assaulted me, he said.
In a fit of rage,I took a kitchen knife and cut myself on the chest, he said.
In the meantime,Mumtaz ran to a phone booth to make a PCR call. But one of her brothers-in-law snatched the knife from Mukhtar and ran after her, police said.
Minutes later,I stepped out of the house and found her lying in a pool of blood on the road. She had stab marks on the abdomen and deep gashes on her hands. A crowd has gathered by then, Mukhtar said.
Police took Mumtaz to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, but she couldnt be saved.
Mumtazs children,Muskaan (7) and Rihan (5),were in school. My uncles were short-tempered. Our neighbours would often tell me how they used to beat my mother. Today they said she would not return, Muskaan said.
We received a PCR call around 8:30 am on Thursday. When we reached the spot,we found Mumtaz lying in a pool of blood. We rushed her to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. We arrested her father-in-law Roshan Khan (60) and one of her brothers-in-law Bablu (25).
