A debt of Rs 70 lakh incurred due to loss in betting, led a BBA student to kidnap and murder a 25-year-old man on July 18.

Abhay Dewan (27) was arrested on Thursday, along with his wife, also a BBA student. A second-year student of Institute of Hotel Management (IHM),Bangalore, and another friend have also been arrested for helping Dewan, police said.

Police said the partially burnt body of Shivam Kapoor,a student of Delhi University and the son of a city businessman, was found in the Ekta Camp area of Pitampura on July 18.

Initially, police could not identify the body because the face was severely burnt. Details provided by an 11-year-old boy helped police get a breakthrough in the case,an officer said.

Tajender Luthra,Joint Commissioner of Police (Northern Range) said the child told police that he had seen a few men and a woman, who were travelling in a Swift car,at the spot where Shivam’s body was found.

The youth’s identity was established after police uploaded his photographs on their website.

“We came to know that Shivam was last seen with one Runeet. Further investigation revealed that Runeet’s friend Abhay Dewan and his wife had been missing since the day of the incident. We arrested Dewan, his wife Mahima,Runeet and one Jatin in the case,” said P Karunakaran,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest).

Police said Runeet,a student of IHM,agreed to help Dewan as he wanted to clear the loan his mother had taken for his admission.

During questioning, police were told that Dewan used to bet on cricket matches and had incurred heavy losses.

“Dewan had seen Shivam with Runeet and knew that the two were friends. According to their plan,on July 18,Runeet offered Shivam a ride in his car. Once inside the car,Dewan shot Shivam in the stomach and also stabbed him,as Runeet drove the car. Later,he administered him a sedative injection,” Karunakaran said.

Police said Dewan asked his wife Mahima and Jatin to help him dispose of Shivam’s body. To ensure that Shivan was dead,Dewan shot him in the head and then burnt his face to prevent identification, police said.

According to police,Mahima offered to help saying no one would suspect a woman.

Dewan was pursuing BBA from Tecnia Institute in Rohini. He met Mahima here and the two married last year. He was also working as a property dealer, police said.

Jatin worked with Dewan at the real estate office.
