CPWD to conduct topographical survey at V-P house — site of proposed office building
As part of Central Vista redevelopment, bungalow at 6, Maulana Azad Road is proposed to be demolished
The current residence of the Vice-President is one of the buildings proposed to be demolished to make way for office buildings. (FB/ Vice President of India) The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) is set to conduct a topographical survey at 6, Maulana Azad Road, the official residence of the Vice-President of India that is proposed to be demolished to make way for new government offices as a part of the Central Vista redevelopment.
The CPWD Tuesday invited bids for conducting the survey, preparation of layout plan and plotting of existing features like buildings, roads, water bodies, trees etc at 6, Maulana Azad Road.
According to sources, the survey is linked to the larger Central Vista redevelopment plan, in which the CPWD had in 2019 proposed constructing new Common Central Secretariat (CCS) buildings after demolishing the existing government office buildings along the Central Vista, which stretches from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan. The current residence of the Vice-President is one of the buildings proposed to be demolished to make way for office buildings. However, sources said the project was yet to be approved. The survey would cover the V-P’s residence, as well as some area in the neighbouring Vigyan Bhawan plot, to see how much area would be available, a source said.
As a part of the Central Vista plan, the CPWD is constructing a new residence for the Vice-president on a 15-acre plot near Rashtrapati Bhavan and North Block. The project started in late-2021 and was scheduled to be completed by November 2022, however, it has been delayed. Sources say the work is nearing completion and could be completed in the next few months.
In August, the contractor building the new Vice-President’s Enclave, Kamladityya Construction, was barred by the CPWD from participating in any new bids for a period of two years due to the delay in completing another project awarded to it, the construction of the new campus of the Indian Institute of Information Technology in Kalyani, West Bengal.
The first three buildings of the proposed 10-building CCS complex are under construction at the site of the erstwhile Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and would take about a year more, as per sources. The CPWD is also working on starting construction of the next CCS building at the site of Raksha Bhawan, which is proposed to be demolished.
