CPI (M) MP P V Sivadasan Monday demanded an inquiry into the collapse of Uttarakhand’s Silkyara tunnel in Rajya Sabha, while alleging that the firm involved didn’t implement the safety measures. NHIDCL is constructing the tunnel and Hyderabad-based Navayuga Engineering Company Ltd is involved in the construction.

A part of the tunnel had collapsed on November 12 trapping 41 workers, following which they were rescued in a multi-agency operation lasting 17 days.

Speaking during the Zero Hour in the House, he said the incident was very painful and that the firm had violated all security measures, rules and norms, calling for a transparent and fair inquiry into the incident.

He said such incidents have taken place in the past too in that area. Ajay Pratap Singh of BJP said the Centre is committed to the wellbeing of the poor and expressed his gratitude to the PM, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami, Union Minister V K Singh and those involved in the operation.
