The Assam government on Thursday announced the latest unlock measures allowing public transport, inter-district movement and relaxing night curfew till 9.30 pm from August 16. While public transport like city buses will be allowed to ply on 50 per cent capacity and proper social distancing norms, a curfew will remain in place from 9.30 pm to 5 am and so will the weekend lockdown. However, the government passed a special order for August 15 on account of Independence Day: people will be allowed to move from 6am to 5 pm subject to maintenance of social distancing norms. The state currently has 21,626 active cases.
More than a week after sharing the stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the bhoomi pujan, Ram Janmabhoomi Trust chief Mahant Nritya Gopal Das tested positive for novel coronavirus this morning. In a statement today, the Uttar Pradesh government said that the Chief Minister has spoken to Mathura District Magistrate Sarvagya Ram Mishra and has urged Dr Trehan of Medanta Hospital to provide immediate medical attention.
10 states — Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh – account for almost 80 per cent of India's current active caseload.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the chief ministers in the video conference on Tuesday that they should set themselves the target of bringing the fatality rate in their states to under 1 per cent.
Fatality rate is the ratio of deaths to positive cases, expressed as percentage. India's national case fatality ratio (CFR) fell to 1.99% on Tuesday, the lowest since the beginning of the national lockdown in March. If the “virus is defeated in these 10 states, the entire country will emerge victorious in the battle against Covid-19,” the Prime Minister said.
He said there was an “urgent need to ramp up testing” in Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Telangana. “...In the states where the testing rate is low, and where the positivity rate is high, there is a need to increase testing – in particular, Bihar, Gujarat, UP, West Bengal, and Telangana, after giving special emphasis on increasing testing,” the Prime Minister said.
Positivity rate, also expressed in per cent, is the number of people detected positive against the number of those tested. Positivity is an indicator of how widespread the disease is.
Meanwhile, coronavirus broke out again in New Zealand after a gap of 102 days.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday said authorities have found four cases of the coronavirus in one Auckland household from an unknown source, the first reported cases of local transmission in the country in 102 days.
Ardern said Auckland, the nation’s largest city, will be moved to Alert Level 3 from midday Wednesday through midnight Friday, meaning that people will be asked to stay at home, while bars and many other businesses will be closed.
New Zealand initially got rid of the virus by imposing a strict lockdown in late March when only about 100 people had tested positive for the disease. That stopped its spread.
