Congress must stop pretending to be protector of democracy: BJP

Sharma's comments come a day after Bajwa had alleged that the BJP-led Centre was using the proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill on Chandigarh as a deliberate tactic to engineer confrontation in Punjab and create the conditions necessary to impose Governor’s Rule in the state.

Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma Monday said that the Congress should stop pretending to be the protector of democracy as its history in the state is filled with central interference and political manipulation.

Sharma’s comments come a day after Bajwa had alleged that the BJP-led Centre was using the proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill on Chandigarh as a deliberate tactic to engineer confrontation in Punjab and create the conditions necessary to impose Governor’s Rule in the state.
Attacking state leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, Sharma said that before pointing fingers at the BJP, the Congress must look at the dark pages of its decades-long rule.

“From 1951 to 1992, whenever Punjab faced turmoil, it was due to the Congress’ failed politics. Whether losing the majority, internal power struggles, or the Centre’s arbitrariness — every time, it was Congress that brought down Punjab’s elected governments. Today, having lost political ground, Congress is suddenly talking about democracy and state rights,” Sharma said.

Sharma added that the seven occasions when President’s Rule was imposed under Congress regimes was not due to any natural crises but it was a result of Congress’ “political calculations” and “internal games.” Congress deprived Punjab of democracy multiple times and ran the state through governors to serve its own interests, he said.
