To promote distinctive products from Tripura and foster cultural and trade exchanges through the One District, One Product initiative, Chief Minister Manik Saha laid the foundation stone for the PM-Unity Mall at Hapania in West Tripura district on Thursday.

However, considering the instability and tensions in Bangladesh, Saha indicated that plans to showcase products from that country at the mall might be put on hold.

“During discussions about the Unity Mall, the then assistant high commissioner of Bangladesh requested us to provide them stalls (at the mall) and we agreed. But given the current situation in Bangladesh, we don’t know where it will lead,” he said at the event.

The proposed mall will feature 45 stalls, including 36 commercial stalls representing the eight districts. The project is expected to require nearly Rs 150 crore and will be built on 4.18 acres of land.

The PM-Unity Mall is set to be constructed at the Tripura Jute Mills Complex on the outskirts of Agartala, having shifted from the initially planned Old Tripura Road Transport Corporation complex owing to space constraints.

“The PM-Unity Mall is a dream project of our PM Modi. He decided to establish PM-Unity Malls in every state to promote One District, One Product. Diverse products made by our artisans will be displayed, and products from other states can also be showcased here. We started with the bhoomi pujan today. If our products reach other places, they will also learn about Tripura and other states will come here,” the chief minister said.

Saha said that improving the quality of value-added and finished products would enhance sales potential and improve people’s socio-economic conditions.

Saha also referred to the prime minister’s Meri Mitti Mera Desh campaign, which ran from August 9 to August 30 last year to instil a sense of patriotism among the populace across the country.

In 2023, 59 youth representatives from the state journeyed to New Delhi, each carrying an Amrit Kalash, which contributed to the preparation of an Amrit Vatika, consisting of soil from all 58 blocks of Tripura and the Agartala Municipal Corporation.

Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma stated that other states would also benefit from the mall.
