On the last day of campaigning for the first phase of the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has waived loans worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore of 15 select industrialists since 2014.

“In the last four-five years, Modiji gave Rs 3.5 lakh crore to the 15 richest people. While an amount of Rs 35,000 crore is needed yearly to run the MGNREGA scheme in the country, he waived loans worth 10 times that amount of 15 select industrialists,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Addressing a public meeting in Kanker district, Gandhi said he wants to give the keys to the treasury to farmers, youth, poor, women and tribals making Chhattisgarh an agriculture centre in five years.

The Congress chief had on Friday held a mega road show in Rajnandgaon, the constituency of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh, three days ahead of the first phase of assembly polls on November 12. Targeting PM Modi, Gandhi alleged that the prime minister did not fulfil the promises he made to people ahead of the 2014 election. Instead, the common man had to bear the brunt of steps like demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST), he said.

The Congress government’s manifesto “Jan Ghoshna Patra” focuses on farmers and has promised farm loan waivers, minimum support price for crops as per the Swaminathan Commission recommendations and a ban on liquor sales.

The state will go to polls in two phases on November 12 and November 20 and counting of votes will take place on December 11.
