Two days after polling in Bastar, suspected Maoists targeted a truck in which four BSF officers and one Chhattisgarh Police personnel were travelling with an IED explosion in Bijapur. The five security personnel and the driver of the truck that had been acquired temporarily for the elections were injured and rushed to the hospital.
Senior police officers said that the IED exploded at Mahadev Ghat, just 4 km from Bijapur, on the National Highway that connects the district headquarters to Bhopalapatnam. “It was a powerful blast and all six people on board were injured. This included the driver, four BSF personnel on election duty, and one Chhattisgarh District Reserve Guard jawan. They were rushed to the district hospital,” a police officer said.
Senior police officers said that the blast was probably “Maoists’ last resort” to cause damage in the elections. “Fortunately, no polling officials were on board as they have all reached their destinations. We are in the process of sending back all personnel that had come in for the elections. We must be careful in that process as well,” a senior officer said.
