Chautala rift widens as INLD expels Dushyant, brother

Dushyant and Digvijay were suspended from the INLD on October 11, days after the rift in the Chautala family came come out in open with the INLD’s massive October 7 rally witnessing hooting against Dushyant’s uncle and Leader of Opposition in Haryana Assembly, Abhay Singh Chautala.

The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Friday expelled Lok Sabha MP Dushyant Chautala and his brother Digvijay Singh from primary membership of the party with immediate effect for “indiscipline”. Their grandfather and party national president Om Prakash Chautala took a call on the matter, the INLD said.

Dushyant, the youngest MP in the Lok Sabha, was also expelled as INLD parliamentary board leader. Apart from Dushyant, the party has one more member in the Lok Sabha.

It was alleged that hooting was done by the supporters of Dushyant.

When contacted by The Indian Express, Dushyant said he would react to the decision on Monday, November 5. That day, his father Ajay Singh Chautala will come out of Tihar jail on furlough and meet his supporters in New Delhi, where there could be a formal announcement on their next step.

Ajay and his father Om Prakash Chautala were sentenced to jail for 10 years under corruption charges in 2013 in connection with recruitment of junior basic teachers during the Chautala regime.

Sources in the INLD said that Chautala, who is currently undergoing treatment in a Delhi hospital since October 25, conveyed his decision regarding expulsion of Dushyant and Digvijay from the hospital.

In a statement, the INLD said that Dushyant and Digvijay “had been accused of indiscipline, hooliganism and spreading disaffection within the party against the party leadership during the birthday celebrations of Chaudhary Devi Lal at Gohana on October 7”.

“He (Om Prakash Chautala) conveyed to the party office that in fact he did not need any outside evidence since he was a witness to the indiscipline and unruly scenes that also continuously interrupted his speech on that day, but still he had referred the matter to the Disciplinary Action Committee of the party. The Committee has concluded that both are guilty as charged,” it said.

In view of the fact that Dushyant and Digvijay are members of Chautala’s immediate family, the INLD statement said, “It was not an easy decision for him (Om Prakash Chautala) to make.” But the party chief said that “all his life he had followed the principles and ideals of Jana Nayak Chaudhary Devi Lal, for whom the party was always bigger than the individual or any family member. Thus he had to make a choice between the party and members of his family and he had chosen the party and decided to concur with the conclusions of the Disciplinary Committee. Accordingly, he had instructed the party office that his decision be immediately put into effect,” it added.

Supporters of Dushyant have hinted at the formation of a new party by his family.
