Chamba valley murder victim’s kin get Rs 4.12 lakh compensation from Himachal govt

(Express Photo) Himachal Pradesh Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on Friday handed over Rs 4.12 lakh to family members of Manohar Lal, who was murdered on June 6 and whose body was cut into eight pieces, which were found in three jute bags near a stream in the Chamba valley three days later.
“We transferred the compensation money of Rs 4,12,500 to the bank account of the family. The state government has given the family half of the compensation money. The rest of the compensation money will be given after the completion of the police investigation. There is a provision of compensation of Rs 8.25 lakh in the SC/ST Act in Himachal Pradesh. The family was earlier given Rs 60,000 as immediate assistance,” deputy commissioner Apoorav Devgun said.
A member of Bhandal gram panchyat said, “Only a handful of people including the speaker, deputy commissioner and SP Abhishek Kumar Yadav went to the victim’s house because CrPC section 144 is still effective in the Salooni subdivision, where Bhandal panchyat is located. We were told that section 144 will stay in place until positive feedback is received from the local intelligence wing.”

Section 144, which bars the gathering of more than three people, was imposed after Lal’s murder triggered communal tension in the area. People protested outside the police station in Kihar and an agitated mob set on fire the houses of the prime suspect, Musaffir Hussain, in Sanghni on June 15.
Police have arrested three people and apprehended two juveniles on charges of murder and destroying evidence. They had earlier said Hussain thought Lal was in a relationship with his minor niece.
