Centre moves SC seeking tenure extension for ED chief S K Mishra till October 15
The government cites the ongoing review by the Financial Action Task Force, an intergovernmental body combating money laundering and terror financing
On July 11, the court declared as “not valid in law” the two tenure extensions granted to Mishra beyond the September 8, 2021, cut-off date and said that he could continue in the post only until July 31. (PTI)

The Centre on Wednesday approached the Supreme Court seeking a tenure extension for Enforcement Directorate chief S K Mishra till October 15 in view of the ongoing Financial Action Task Force review.
Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta told a bench presided by Justice B R Gavai that an application had been filed and sought an urgent hearing. The court agreed to hear it Thursday.
In its application, the Centre said it “is compelled to approach” the “court seeking extension of the date up to 15.10.2023…in view of the ongoing FATF review, which is at a critical stage where submissions on effectiveness have been made on 21.07.2023 and on-site visit is scheduled to be conducted in November 2023”.
On July 11, the court declared as “not valid in law” the two tenure extensions granted to Mishra beyond the September 8, 2021, cut-off date and said that he could continue in the post only until July 31.
In November last year, the 1984-batch IRS officer was granted a second tenure extension, up to November 18, 2023.
The bench of Justices B R Gavai, Vikram Nath and Sanjay Karol, however, upheld as constitutional the amendments made to the Central Vigilance Commission Act 2003, the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act 1946 and the Fundamental Rules in 2021, enabling the tenure extension.
