Centenary Celebrations: AMU to bury time capsule of its 100-year-old history on R-Day

A time capsule is a collection of objects considered typical of the present period, which is buried so it can be discovered in the future.

“Besides the details of all the buildings on the campus, the time capsule will also have copies of convocation addresses of chief guests from 1922 to 2018. The documents about growth, development and journey of the varsity will also be preserved in the time capsule,” said Abrar.

The time capsule will be buried in the park opposite the Victoria Gate, which is the oldest building in the university, said the university official.

The papers which will be kept in the capsule will be preserved by making them acid-free and with addition of some chemicals.

“We have taken all possible precautions regarding the capsule so it can be preserved for a long time. The capsule has been built with high tempered steel and is around four feet deep. It will be buried 30 feet deep into the earth,” the spokesperson added.

On December 22, as part of the centenary celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had described the AMU campus and its history of education as a “priceless heritage” of the country and praised its alumni across the world as “representatives of India’s culture”. While addressing the AMU fraternity, he had said, “There are ideological differences in a society, it is natural. But when it comes to attainment of national goals, then these differences should be kept aside.” The PM had also released a special commemorative postal stamp to mark the occasion.
