THE CBI opposed Lalu Prasad’s bail plea in the Supreme Court, contending that granting him relief “would not only be against” the court’s “zero tolerance policy in corruption…but would also be setting a very wrong precedence in all corruption cases”.

Lalu has been convicted in four cases arising out of the fodder scam.

In a counter affidavit filed in the apex court, the probe agency said that the RJD chief “in the garb on medical ground…is seeking bail to pursue his political activities in the ensuing 2019 Lok Sabha election”.

The affidavit was filed in response to Lalu’s petition challenging the Jharkhand High Court’s order dismissing his bail plea.

CBI said that Lalu moving for bail “simultaneously” on medical grounds “and to guide the party to carry out all essential responsibilities as a party president in ensuing” general elections “are mutually contradictory and manifests that in the garb of bail on medical grounds”, he “wants to pursue his political activities which is impermissible in law”.

The agency claimed his bail was rightly rejected by the courts “considering the gravity of the offence of corruption in public as well as the constitutional office which the petitioner abused and misappropriated huge amount of public money.”
