By-Election Results 2025 Highlights: Congress candidate wins Jubilee Hills bypoll, BJP’s Devyani Rana wins Nagrota bypoll

Reacting to her win from the Nagrota constituency, BJP candidate Devyani Rana says, "I would like to thank the voters of Nagrota constituency from the bottom of my heart. The way they blessed Devender Singh Rana in 2024, they have blessed me too, and I will be forever grateful to them."

BJP's Devyani Rana has won by a margin of 24,647 votes from Nagrota constituency. The runner-up is Harsh Dev Singh of the J&K National Panthers Party (India). In third place is Shamim Begum from the J&K National Conference.

Dr R Lalthangliana of the Mizo National Front has won the bypoll from the Dampa constituency by a margin of 562 votes. The runner-up is Vanlalsailova from the Zoram People's Movement.

The Anta seat is witnessing a triangular contest between BJP’s Morpal Suman, Congress’s former cabinet minister Pramod Jain Bhaya, and Congress rebel Naresh Meena, among a total of 15 candidates in the fray.

For the ruling BJP’s Bhajan Lal Sharma’s government, which has been facing some questions over its administration of the state, an election win would be a shot in the arm. Just days ago, in a move that raised eyebrows, Chief Secretary Sudhansh Pant moved back to the Centre, virtually bringing out friction within the government in the open.

The bypoll is also important – to a certain extent – for former CM Vasundhara Raje. Unlike bypolls in the previous Ashok Gehlot government (2018-2023), when a sidelined Raje kept away from campaigning for the bypolls, and Congress ended up winning the majority 0f them, she has now campaigned for the BJP candidate Suman.

For the Congress party, a win would mean that its narrative of Sharma government’s inexperience will gain wind. It will also help stimulate the sluggish state unit of the party. For Ashok Gehlot too, a win will help burnish his image as the Congress candidate Bhaya is considered close to the former three-term CM.

Around this time last year, the BJP had won five out of seven which went to bypolls in the state. The Congress party, which had four seats, managed to win just the Dausa seat. A win now may help the party push forward its perception of the Sharma government.

But perhaps, the poll is most important for Independent Naresh Meena. This is the third time in three years that Meena has rebelled and jeopardised the Congress’s chances. In the 2023 Assembly elections, Meena had rebelled and contested from the Chhabra seat, also in Baran district, as an Independent and finished third, with BJP winning the seat. Last year, he sought a Congress ticket for the Deoli-Uniara Assembly bypoll in neighbouring Tonk but was turned down again. BJP won the seat, and Meena finished second, pushing Congress’s Kastoor Chand Meena to the third position.

If he manages to win, it will be a vindication of his supporters’ claims that the Congress party is apprehensive of his rise and hence has been keeping him out.

The Tarn Taran assembly by-election has seen the lead for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu widen further. Sandhu is currently leading with 20,454 votes, extending his margin to 3,668 votes. Sukhwinder Kaur of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is trailing with 16,786 votes.

The poll is probably most important for Independent candidate Naresh Meena. This, is the third time in three years that Meena has rebelled and jeopardised the Congress’s chances.

After three rounds of counting for Mizoram’s Dampa by-poll, the Mizo National Front’s R. Lalthangliana has taken the lead over his closest competitor, the Zoram People Movement’s Vanlalsailova. The by-poll, which was necessitated by the death of Dampa’s two-time MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo from the MNF in July this year, is a critical one for the MNF. While it was swept out of power in the state in 2023 by the ZPM, the Dampa seat was one of the only 10 it managed to retain and it is keen to demonstrate that it cannot be written off as a strong regional voice in the state’s political landscape, where it is seen to have currently ceded this space to the ZPM. While the outcome of the bypoll will not affect the ZPM’s hold on the 40-member Mizoram assembly, the burgeoning young party will want to maintain its run of electoral victories, after winning the state’s lone Lok Sabha seat last year as well.

As per Election Commission of India, Naveen Yadav V of the Congress is leading by just 47 votes, with Maganti Sunitha on the trail.

Currently, BJP's Jay Dholakia leading by 4,904 in Nuapada, Odisha, according to the ECI website.

Shiromani Akali Dal's Sukhwinder Kaur leads in Tarn Taran according to ECI website. Harmeet Singh Sandhu from the Aam Aadmi Party trails by 1,480 votes as of 9am.

The seats fell vacant following the resignation of Omar Abdullah in Budgam and the disqualification of Kanwarlal in Rajasthan’s Anta.

The remaining six constituencies — Nagrota in J&K, Ghatsila (ST) in Jharkhand, Jubilee Hills in Telangana, Tarn Taran in Punjab, Dampa (ST) in Mizoram, and Nuapada in Odisha — went to polls after the deaths of their sitting legislators.
