A dermatologist allegedly killed his 45-year-old house help by battering her with a bat and then stabbing her with a knife in the upscale Kailash Hills area in South Delhi on Thursday morning, police said.
Police said the accused, Dr Manish Gupta (54), has been arrested. He runs his own clinic near his house in Mount Kailash.Officers said that during questioning, the accused told them that the victim, Meena, “brought bad energy” to the house. They added that the accused has been on antidepressant medication for years now, and that he thought that his family “valued” the victim more than him.
“He felt that Meena was bringing in ‘bad energy’, which was impacting the career of his son. His son is 19-20 years old, but his studies were disrupted after Class 12. He had recently joined a LLB course,” said a police officer.
The accused asked his wife Tina, who is a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), to fire the help, but she refused, an officer said.
Police said initial questioning revealed that Meena had been working at the house for the past 10 years.
Agitated, he followed Meena to the rooftop of his third-floor house on Thursday morning while she was going to hang washed clothes for sun-drying. “In a room adjacent to the rooftop, there was a bat and a knife. He first hit her with the bat, after which she fell to the ground. He then stabbed her multiple times,” said an officer.
Police said the incident came to light when a call was received at 11.30 am from a neighbour at the Amar Colony police station about a body being found. “At 11.36 am, information regarding the murder of a woman near Dr Manish Gupta’s house, Mount Kailash, was received at Amar Colony police station.
The caller said the body of a woman was lying, soaked in blood, on the rooftop of an adjacent building,” said DCP (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari.
When police reached the spot, they found the accused squatting near the body. He allegedly told police that he had hit her with a bat and then stabbed with a knife.
“The accused was beside the body. He admitted to hitting the victim with a bat and later stabbing her with a knife. Gupta has been apprehended and he is being questioned further regarding the motive,” said DCP Tiwari.
“The doctor’s statements are being verified and the motive is being ascertained,” a police source said.
