Hyderabad police on Monday night detained the Telangana BJP’s social media in-charge, Sumiran Kommaraju, for a poster that allegedly “maliciously defamed” Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

Kommaraju had designed a poster showing Revanth Reddy seated on a chair with multiple robotic arms projecting outward. Each arm was seen holding pieces of paper on which corruption and other allegations were written.

For instance, one of the pieces of paper read, ‘Brothers controlling real estate’, which pertains to an allegation against the Chief Minister regarding the purchase of prime land by his brother.

The posters were pasted outside Gandhi Bhawan, the Telangana Congress’s headquarters in Hyderabad.

Along with Kommaraju, two others — social media team members Sai Kiran Goud and Ajay — were also arrested by police, the BJP has alleged. When contacted, Hyderabad police said that an FIR has been registered but did not reveal what charges were being levelled against the accused.

The state and central unit of the BJP have strongly criticised the Congress over the move, which the BJP said reeked of “political vendetta” and “Emergency mindset”.

The BJP’s Telangana president, N Ramachander Rao, told The Indian Express, “This arrest is undemocratic and intolerant. They (Congress) can make posters of Modi selling chai, but cannot stand a poster criticising Revanth Reddy.”

Rao had earlier posted on X, “Is this the so-called Mohabbat Ki Dukaan? Behind this mask lies the same old Congress Emergency mindset. The people of Telangana will not bow before this dictatorship… This is not just an arrest, it is a direct assault on freedom of expression, a shameless attempt to crush dissent and silence BJP’s voice in Telangana.”

Taking a cue from Rao, the BJP’s national X handle shared the poster, and said, “They arrested him for this poster. Emergency mindset is still well and alive in India.”
