A 20-year-old student of BITS Pilani’s Goa campus was found dead in his hostel room on Thursday morning, police said. Stating that it is suspected to be a suicide, police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated inquest proceedings.
According to the police, the incident was reported around 10:15 am, following which a police team rushed to the spot. The 20-year-old student, who hailed from Lucknow, was pursuing a dual-degree program and exams were currently underway.
A police officer said, “The door of his hostel room was locked from the inside. When there was no response, some students alerted the college authorities, following which the door was unlocked. Prima facie, it is a case of suicide. No note has been recovered.”
“The family of the student has arrived from Lucknow. The post-mortem will be conducted on Friday,” said an officer.
A spokesperson for the campus from the public relations unit did not respond to requests seeking a comment.
This is the third case of suicide reported at the Goa campus in the past five months. On March 4, a 20-year-old student from the 2022 batch allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room.
Earlier, a 20-year-old student, who was pursuing a dual degree, was found dead in his hostel room on December 10 last year. Police had said that an exam was scheduled on the day the incident occurred, but the student did not appear for it. The incident was reported in the evening, when fellow students went looking for him and found the hostel room locked from the inside.
