Bihar govt announces 10% reservation for EWS in judicial services, government law colleges

The announcement comes just a day after the government released the first set of data from Bihar's caste survey.

Bihar government on Tuesday announced 10 per cent reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the judicial services and state-run law colleges and universities.

The announcement came just a day after the government released the first set of data from state’s caste survey.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, news agency PTI reported.

“The cabinet approved amendments in the guidelines of the State Judicial Services, 1951, allowing 10 per cent reservation for EWS category in judicial services and also in state-run law institutes and universities,” PTI quoted Additional Chief Secretary (Cabinet Secretariat) S Siddhartha as saying.

A detailed notification in this regard will soon be issued by the department concerned, Siddhartha added.

According to the data, Extremely Backward Communities (EBCs) account for 36.01% of the population, while Backward Classes comprise an additional 27.12%.

The state cabinet also approved the construction of 100 veterinary hospitals in the state, Siddhartha said. “A total of 100 first-class veterinary hospitals will be constructed in different districts of the state. Besides, there will be training centers at all these hospitals. For this, Rs 225 crore will be spent in 17 districts,” PTI quoted Siddhartha as saying.

The state cabinet also nodded in favour of creation of 30 additional clerk posts for handling matters related to the Consumers Affairs Department, Siddhartha said.
