9 killed, over 40 injured as Bengaluru-Ernakulam Express train derails near Hosur

The incident occurred around 7:45 am today, reports said.

Nine persons were killed and more than 40 injured on Friday when eight bogies of Bangalore-Ernakulam Inter City Express derailed on the outskirts of the city after it hit a boulder that rolled onto the track.
The accident took place at 7.33 am near Bidaragere village between Anekal Road and Hosur railway stations. The Eranakulam-bound train had left Bangalore at around 6.15 am.

ACP (GRP) R P Sharma said nine persons, including a child, have been killed in the incident. The victims have been identified as Ittira Antony (57), C R Venugopal (47), Aman (9) and Ayesha Zahir Khan (25) from Bangalore; Vipin V V (22) from Palakkad; Punithavanthi (61) from Coimbatore; Naseema Khan (67) from Kolkata; Irsha Manaf (24) from (Kollam); and K R George (70) from Thrissur. D8 compartment was the worst hit.

Soon after the mishap, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted: “Unfortunate rail accident in Karnataka. Boulder fell on track in Ghat section, train hit it. directed all sr officers to rush with full help (sic).”

All 42 injured passengers have been admitted to various hospitals in Bangalore and Anekal. The condition of 17 injured are stated to be critical.
Railway police, state police, fire and emergency service department officials, national and state disaster relief teams have been deployed at the site to carry out rescue operations, but they said the bogies were badly mangled.

“I was in the last compartment. I was surprised the train seemed to stop around 7.30 am. I got down and learnt that bogies D8 to 11 and four others (two AC chair cars and two unreserved coaches) had derailed. People were screaming for help. We rushed to rescue them along with locals villagers,” V L Joseph, a school teacher who was travelling to Trichur.

Services of 35-year-old welder Afsal Khan were sought to cut through the bogies to rescue more than a dozen people from the mangled bogies. “We pulled out more than a dozen people. We retrieved the body of the boy who died. It was a very painful moment in my life,” he said.
“The train derailed between two small hillocks. The presence of the hillock on one side prevented the rolling of bogies. This reduced casualties,” said Shivanna, a local at the site.
