A group of Bajrang Dal activists on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, stormed a diocese school in Assam’s Nalbari town and destroyed Christmas decorations there. The same group had also destroyed Christmas ornaments being sold in a shop in the town.

Nalbari SSP Bibekananda Das said that the police have received a complaint from the authorities of St. Mary’s English School Panigaon in connection with the incident.

“Along with the incident in the school, the same group of people also went to a shop in a market in Nalbari town where items like Santa caps and masks were being sold, and burned them. We are going to register an FIR combining both these incidents. There appears to have been around nine people in the group,” the SSP said.

Fr. James Vadakeyil from the Diocese of Bongaigaon, which the school comes under, said that the establishment was empty at the time as the school is closed for winter holidays. The school has around 1,000 students and was opened in 2010.

“At around 3 pm, a group of people came in looking for the principal, but he wasn’t there. So they went around and vandalised the nativity crib and all the other Christmas decorations. There was a big banner that had been put up for admission and they destroyed that too. They dismantled and burned the decorations while shouting slogans,” he said.

In videos of the incident, the group can be purportedly be heard shouting Bajrang Dal slogans and slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hindu Rashtra’.
