The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday conducted searches in Punjab in connection with its probe into the attack on the Indian High Commission in Canada by pro-Khalistan supporters, officials said.

The anti-terror probe agency had registered a case in this regard in June last year.

The NIA is conducting searches in Punjab in the case, they said.

The case relates to protest by pro-Khalistani supporters outside the Indian mission in Ottawa, Canada on March 23, 2023, “who raised anti-India slogan, tied Khalistani flags on the boundary wall of the High Commission and hurled two grenades inside the High Commission building”, according to the NIA’s first information report (FIR).

The raid included one at the Makhan Singh Musafir, a Sikh preacher (Kavishri singer), at Smalsar of Moga.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Musafir said: “I was not at home when the NIA team came. My family was there. I was in Amritsar for some work. I had visited Canada in December 2019 and returned in November next year for my religious programmes across the country for 11 months. I was in touch with Bhagat Singh, the head of Gurdwara in Ottawa, who had invited us for the programme. After returning, I hardly spoke to him but of course, we had each other’s numbers.”

He added: “They were inviting us again to conduct programmes but it could not materialise due to sponsorship issues. Today, the NIA team told us that Bhagat Singh was involved in the attack on the Indian High Commission Ottawa in March 2023. However, I never spoke to him on anything beyond religious programmes. NIA team has found nothing against me. They also searched my laptop.”
