(AP Photo)Assam Assembly Election 2026 Live Updates: Voting for Assam Assembly elections for all 126 seats in Assam in a single phase is underway. The key parties in the state are the BJP, the Congress, and the AIUDF. Assam has seen a healthy turnout so far, with 75.91% voters going to booths for voting till 3 pm.
Meanwhile, a polling official was found dead in Sonitpur ahead of the voting.
Who’s promised what? The BJP has promised a Uniform Civil Code in Assam, stricter laws against “land jihad” and “love jihad”, along with more “pushbacks” of alleged illegal immigrants. It also plans to expand welfare schemes, including increasing monthly financial aid for women from Rs 1,250 to Rs 3,000.
The Congress will contest 98 seats in Assam in alliance with Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, All Party Hill Leaders Conference and Left parties, after reshaping its coalition post BPF’s shift to the BJP. Meanwhile, AIUDF’s performance will be closely watched given its minority vote base, especially after Ajmal’s heavy defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Controversies: Allegations involving families of Gaurav Gogoi and Himanta Biswa Sarma have escalated during the Assam poll campaign. Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed the NDA is likely to win 90-100 seats in the Assam Assembly polls, with the BJP alone expected to cross 70 seats. He also attacked the Congress over the Pawan Khera row, alleging that “Those who levelled allegations are now running away…The governments of three states have said that the documents on which the allegations were levelled are duplicate…Akhil Gogoi is a kid; we have to nab the big fishes…These documents might have been given to Pawan Khera by Rahul Gandhi.”
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a post on X highlighting high voter turnout and public participation by the people. He described the election as "historic".
What we set out to do was not merely fight an election, but to turn it into a movement — a movement to protect our civilisational values, our culture, and our land.

The run up to the Assam elections Here are the key issues in the Assam 2026 elections:
Regional identity and illegal immigration has been a burning issue in this election. In fact, this has been a poll issue for a long time in the state. The NRC, CAA, and Assam Accord still remain among the most emotionally charged issues.
The delimitation controversy is also at the fore since this is the first state election since the 2023 redrawing of constituencies. The exercise was conducted on the 2001 census data, and has reduced minority-dominated seats from around 30 to around 22. This has led to allegations of manipulation.
Unemployment inflation have also been in focus, with the opposition targeting the BJP on "unfulfilled" job promises. The BJP, on the other hand, says it has created more than 1.5 lakh jobs since 2021.
The 'passport row' came into national focus as the Congress demanded a probe into alleged foreign assets and multiple passports linked to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. The BJP, too, has been levelling allegations against Gaurav Gogoi's wife Elizabeth Colburn, claiming that she has Pakistan links.
The investigation into the death of singer Zubeen Garg kept emotions high, particularly among the youth, during the campaigns.
High-profile Congress leaders defecting to the BJP, and the UPPL walking out of the NDA last month over seat-sharing have also kept political pundits as well as voters on their toes.
