A trial court on Monday acquitted Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a defamation case filed by Congress leader Shiela Dikshit’s former aide, Pawan Khera. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted relief to the AAP leader citing lack of evidence against him.
In his complaint, Khera alleged that Kejriwal used objectionable language against former chief minister Dikshit during a protest against power tariff hike in 2012. Khera, who is now a Congress spokesperson, had served as Dikshit’s political secretary when she was Delhi chief minister.
Kejriwal was subsequently put on trial in 2013 after he pleaded not guilty. However, the Aam Aadmi Party chief had moved the Delhi High Court seeking quashing of the criminal defamation case filed against him. In his plea, Kejriwal questioned Kehra’s locus standi in the case.
