A 17-year-old student of Narayana Junior College, on the outskirts of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh, abruptly walked out of his classroom during a 15-minute interval and jumped to his death from the third floor on Thursday morning, police said.

His classmates, who were sharing Sankranti treats that they brought from home, saw him climbing the parapet wall, but before they could react, he jumped.

“We spoke to his classmates, including the boy who sits next to him. This morning, he was talking about upcoming exams and saying that he would fail. He appeared upset and sad, according to his classmates,” said Anantapur Rural SI Ram Babu, the investigating officer in the case.

“Although the Sankranti vacation ended on January 20, many students came back to the junior college at Somaladoddi one or two days later. The boy arrived Thursday morning at 8.30 am, and was dropped by two of his cousins. His family lives in Bathalapalli in Sri Sathyasai District, just 35 km from here. As soon as the class started, he asked about the exam schedule…and appeared upset,” Babu said.

He was rushed to a nearby government hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Police said they were speaking to his parents for more information. “His father said that they are financially very well off and that there was no pressure on him to excel academically. According to his father, he returned to college of his own will and was not reluctant or upset to go back,” Babu said.
