With the Supreme Court verdict in the Ayodhya Ram temple-Babri Masjid dispute expected soon, RSS and BJP leaders met Muslim intellectuals and clerics at Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s residence Tuesday.

“Meeting was very constructive & fruitful. Intellectuals, religious leaders, academicians from Muslim community expressed commitment to strengthen fabric of social harmony, brotherhood, unity under any circumstances & defeat forces who want to disturb harmony & peace,” Naqvi, the Union Minister of Minority Affairs, tweeted after the meeting.

Naqvi said it was stressed at the meeting that whichever way the verdict goes, excessive celebration or mourning should be avoided.

Kahin par bhi jeet ka junooni jashn aur haar ka hahakaari hungama nahin hona chahiye, usse bachna chahiye (Nowhere should the verdict be excessively celebrated as a victory, nor should there be a brouhaha over defeat. We should completely avoid this),” he was quoted by PTI as saying.

Apart from Naqvi, RSS leaders Krishna Gopal and Ramlal, former Union minister Shahnawaz Hussain, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind general secretary Mahmood Madani, Shia cleric Kalbe Jawad and filmmaker Muzaffar Ali were present at the meet.

“This verdict will strengthen the country. A message of unity has gone out with today’s meeting. This dialogue (between the RSS leaders and Muslims) that has started will not stop and meetings between the Sangh representatives and the Muslim community will continue in future as well,” BJP leader Hussain was quoted by PTI as saying.

According to PTI, RSS leader Gopal said at the meeting that in the entire history of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), none of its chiefs have ever uttered a single word against the Muslim community.

According to reports, it was suggested that another such meeting should take place, which should include Hindu groups such as the VHP and the Shiv Sena.

Filmaker and artist Muzaffar Ali, who was present at the meeting, was quoted by PTI as saying: “Today, the economics of the country is so bad, if things go wrong and the people enter into any kind of communal disturbance, the economy will be very badly shattered. This is a very good initiative, dialogue is very important.”

Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor appealed to people to behave carefully on social media.

According to PTI, others present at the meeting included All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Kamal Faruqui, former MP Shahid Siddiqui, former Haj Committee chairman Qaiser Shamim, JNU professor Abdul Nafey and All India Sufi Sajjada Nashin Council chairman Syed Nasiruddin Chishti.
