Amid  a raging controversy after it released in theatres, Adipurush makers on Sunday said they will change some dialogues in the film as they have been perceived as ‘disrespecting the Ramayana’, the Hindu epic on which the film is based.

The big point: Soon after Adipurush released on Friday last week, it received widespread criticism from political parties and audiences for using “pedestrian language” for Hindu gods, especially Hanuman. Responding to the backlash, the film’s production company T-Series said on Sunday that the team has decided to make “alterations” so that it resonates with the “core essence” of the film.

What was the criticism?: Various political parties, actors, and audience members had attacked Adipurush, saying that the speech used in the film for Hanuman was too colloquial and oversimplified. A few dialogues in particular, during the ‘Lanka dahan’ sequence, where the Hanuman is heard using ostensibly offensive language, were the most widely criticised. The Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and AAP had slammed the film for “hurting Indian sensibilities.”

What the film makers have said: Manoj Muntashir, Adipurush’s script writer and a three-time national award winner, said on Sunday that he had penned more than 4,000 lines in Adipurush but some sentiments got hurt “because of five lines.” “I can give countless arguments in favour of my dialogues, but this will not reduce your pain. I and the producer-director of the film have decided that some of the dialogues which are hurting you, we’ll revise them,” a statement issued by him read.

“Team Adipurush in respect of Public Opinion, Revamps Dialogues for a Unifying Film Experience valuing the input of the public and the audience. The dialogues are being modified in consultation & advice of CBFC,” T-Series said in a statement on Twitter.

What’s next: The new dialogues will be added to the film this week, Muntashir has said.

Meanwhile: The Rs 600-crore budget blockbuster is doing well at the box office. It clocked Rs 140 crore on its opening day, and over Rs 100 crore on Saturday, with actors such as Ranbir Kapoor, Ram Charan, and Ananya Birla each buying a 10,000 tickets of the film for charity.
